Who We Are

Slagheap Cycles is a small shop located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where we repair all manner of two-wheeled vehicles. Our specialty is classic Japanese motorcycles from the 1960s through the 1980s, but we also have a wide range of experience fixing scooters, mopeds and modern machines. We get a lot of satisfaction from resurrecting machines that have sat neglected and unused for years, and once they're back on the road, we help them stay running with tuneups, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance.

While we don't believe that riding a motorcycle can change the world, we do believe that they are useful tools that can change our lives in small but tangible ways. It can be saving money by having a cheap and reliable way to get to your daily appointments, having a way to get out and explore a world beyond the town you live in, learning lifelong skills by having a chance to fix something yourself, or finding your own strength and courage in learning how to ride, these are all things that we have experienced through our relationship with motorcycles. We hope that this shop can help others to have similarly transformative experiences.

We are also interested in a shop that operates in ways that reflect how we wish the world could be. We don't work on motorcycles to get rich, and we want our services to be accessible to everyone, but we also want to make an honest living and work with dignity. We hope that our pricing strikes a good balance in this regard.

We are also interested in sharing, and non-monetary exchanges. We know that this world is full of people with myriad talents, and it is sometimes sad to see how we only see the money that those talents generate, and never get to know how that money was made. So, to remedy this, we would like to offer more abilities to barter and other non-monetary exchanges, so that we can directly share our skills with each other. For example: we fix the flat tire on your motorcycle, you bring us fresh produce from your garden; I rebuild your carburetors, you fix my cavities. To help facilitate this process, here is a list of things we know that we want in exchange for our services. Also, just be prepared for us to say no if we aren't up for a trade, it happens, sorry.

Finally, we are people who want our workplace to be an awesome, inspiring, comfortable place to be. Part of that is reflected in the people we choose to work with being interesting, diverse, and generally unique people. We do not condone any degrading or abusive language or behavior by anyone, whether worker or customer. Please remember this when you come to our shop, and also know that we will do our absolute best to treat you with the utmost respect, so long as you accord us the same treatment. Thank you.
